Checker's first single highlighted his abilities as a mimic, with "The Class" including impersonations of Fats Domino, The Coasters, Elvis Presley and The Chipmunks. While "The Class" became a minor novelty hit, it wasn't until 1960 when he recorded a cover of Hank Ballard's "The Twist" film poster that Checker began his path to iconic status in pop music. "The Twist" hit No. 1 in autumn 1960 film poster and remained on the charts for four months before experiencing some decline only to gather momentum and top the charts film poster again in late 1961. "The Twist" remains the only song to hit No. 1 in two different years. His 32 charting songs before 1966 include "Do the Pony," "Let's Twist Again," "The Fly," "Slow Twistin'," "Limbo Rock" and "Popeye (The Hitchhiker)." In 1988, Checker returned to the Top 40 for the first time in a quarter of a century when he appeared on The Fat Boys' rap version of "The Twist," and Checker has tried his hand at rap under the moniker Chubby C and OD.
