| BIA involves attaching four electrodes to the subject on the hand and foot on one side of the weider body. The battery operated devices then measure the voltage drop across the body as a small electric current is applied. Fat acts as an insulator, whereas lean tissue, with its water and salt content acts as a very efficient conductor. Hence the body impedance (or resistance) gives a measure of relative fatness.
