In the Diet and Reinfarction Trial (DART), men recovering from myocardial cfsan infarction who were randomized cfsan to receive dietary advice to increase fatty fish consumption had a 29% reduction in all-cause mortality at 2-year follow-up. GISSI patients randomized to receive omega-3 fatty acid supplements (1 g/d) had a significant 10–15% reduction in the combined primary endpoint of death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and stroke. In the Lyon Diet Heart Study, patients randomized to receive a Mediterranean-type diet including high monounsaturated fat had significant reductions at 1- to 4-year follow up (mean 27 months) in the combined primary endpoint of death from cardiovascular causes or nonfatal acute myocardial infarction (73%) as well as in cardiac mortality (76%) and total mortality (70%).
