While this disorder may occur in the absence of other co-morbid disorders, it is frequently seen in patients who have diabetes, other cardiovascular diseases, and obesity. Fatty acids have also been shown to have an influence on serum lipids. Evidence from epidemiologic and clinical secondary prevention trials suggests that the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), particularly eicosapentanoic acid, EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, DHA, may have a significant role in the prevention of coronary heart disease.
