The battery operated devices then measure the voltage relaxation drop across the body as a small electric current is applied. Fat acts as an insulator, whereas lean tissue, with its water and salt content acts as a very efficient conductor. Hence the body impedance (or resistance) gives a measure of relative fatness. Recently, a new instrument has been relaxation made, resembling a set of bathroom scales, which incorporates this impedance technology (Tanita body-fat analyser). Subjects stand barefooted on two metal sole plates and the electric current passes through their legs. The principle is the same as traditional impedance machines, although the composition of the whole body is estimated from the measurement made in the legs alone. This is the first device which allows people to conveniently measure their own fatness. |
